“Ye ancient Dogge of Malta” was how the Maltese were referred to as far back as 28 centuries ago. Even in the 1500’s Maltese were so revered they sold for $2000. Also, unlike so many other breeds that have developed and evolved, the Maltese is identical to their ancient ancestors. In spite of their small size, under 7 pounds, 4 to 6 pounds preferably, this little silky, long haired dog is one of the most gentle-mannered of all little dog breeds. They are playful and full on energy making them a great family pet. The AKC recognized the breed in the Toy Group in 1888 and since that time they have remained one of the more popular breeds.
