The German Shorthaired Pointed was developed in Germany and is thought to be a cross between the German Bird Dog, Spanish Pointer and other German scent hounds. This breed is an around hunter and is great on water and land. They are proficient with game including pheasant, quail, grouse, waterfowl, raccoons, possums and even deer. Their coat is different degrees of liver and white and requires minimal grooming. Their tails are docked but not so short that they do not create a perfect line when pointing. The GSP is highly intelligent, easy to train, athletic, enthusiastic, and elegant. They make great dogs for the active family because they due require daily exercise. The AKC recognized this breed in the Sporting Group in 1930. They range in size from 55 to 70 pounds, and stand 23 to 25 inches tall at the withers.
